The Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games marked the debut of a new discipline within the Gymnastics competition. For the first time a Rhythmic Gymnastics competition would be part of the Olympic Games.

Canadian athlete Lori Fung won the first rhythmic gymnastics Olympic gold medal, with Doina Saticulescu from Romania taking silver and Regina Weber from West Germany, bronze.
