Hooker Vaults to Olympic Record

In November 2016, Denys YURCHENKO of Ukraine, competing in the Athletics Men's pole vault event, in which he ranked first and for which he was awarded the gold medal, has been disqualified from the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

Steve Hooker claims gold for Australia in the men's pole vault and sets an Olympic record of 5.96m. Denys Yurchenko vaults 5.70m but a hamstring injury prevents further action. Lukanenko and Hooker go on to clear 5.85m, but miss their first two attempts at 5.90m. On his third and final try, Hooker vaults the gold medal height, then goes on to a record 5.96m.
