    Olympic Solidarity to organise additional Continental Athlete Forums this year

    The Chair of the Olympic Solidarity Commission, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, met with the Chair and Vice-Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission and the Chairs of the Athletes’ Commissions of the five Continental Associations to discuss the ongoing Olympic Solidarity programmes of support towards the organisation of Continental Athlete Forums, in particular, and the support to athletes in general.

    From Slovakia to Suriname, Young Change-Makers give back to their communities

    The new wave of Young Change-Makers (formerly Young Ambassadors) appointed for the Youth Olympic Games Buenos Aires 2018 hit the ground running last month as they were set the task to volunteer in their communities; and they delivered! From Slovakia to Suriname, Pakistan to Panama, the YCMs threw themselves into the challenge giving up their time to support their local clubs to marshal at sports events and to pass on their experience to the younger generation.

    Coventry unanimously elected on IOC Executive Board as Session concludes

    The 132nd International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session concluded its meeting in PyeongChang today with a unanimous vote to elect Kirsty Coventry, incoming Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, to the Executive Board (EB). Three athletes were also elected as IOC Members.

    Kirsty Coventry announced as next Chair of IOC Athletes’ Commission

    Following a vote of confidence from all members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Athletes’ Commission (AC), Zimbabwean Olympic swimmer Kirsty Coventry was officially appointed by the IOC President as the Commission’s chair during a joint meeting between the IOC Executive Board and Athletes’ Commission in PyeongChang.

    International Testing Agency (ITA) moves closer to being operational

    The Foundation Board of the ITA, along with its Chair Dr Valérie Fourneyron, held its first meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday 18 January, which marks a further step on the organisation’s road to becoming fully operational in early 2018. IOC President Thomas Bach also addressed the Board and expressed his enthusiastic support for the ITA’s mission to provide anti-doping services to those International Federations (IFs) and Major Event Organisers (MEOs) that wish to delegate their anti-doping programs to a body that operates independent of sports organisations’ and national interests.

    Philip Boit, Kenya’s first Winter Olympian

    Cross-country skier Philip Boit made history when he became the first Kenyan to compete at the Olympic Winter Games, racing in the 10km classic event at Nagano 1998. Despite coming last, he was enthusiastically embraced by the winner, Norwegian Bjorn Daehlie. It was a moment that marked the start of a lasting friendship.
