    Ninety-five years ago in Paris, in the space of two days – 18 and 20 July 1924 – Johnny Weissmuller was crowned Olympic champion in the 400m freestyle, the 100m freestyle and the 4x200m freestyle relay with the USA. He also played as a centre forward in the US team that took bronze in the water polo tournament. After winning two more golds four years later in Amsterdam (100m and 4x200m), he embarked on a career change that would see him demonstrate his swimming talents in a slightly different way…

    Johnny Weissmuller - First Swimming Superstar

    American Johnny Weissmuller was one of the greatest swimmers of all time. He went on to capture a total of six medals during his Olympic career. At the 1924 Games, he won the 100m event in world record time (58.6 seconds), Weissmuller also claimed the 400m freestyle and 4x200m relay team Olympic titles and a bronze medal in water polo.     A part of Hollywood legend for his role as Tarzan, Johnny Weissmuller was nonetheless an accomplished swimmer. At the Paris 1924 Games, he won gold in the 100m freestyle, 400m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay.     The legend of Duke Kahanamoku, the father of modern surfing and double Olympic champion in Antwerp

    At the Antwerp 1920 Games, Hawaiian champion Duke Kahanamoku became the first swimmer to win the Olympic 100m freestyle twice in a row. This came after his first title eight years earlier in Stockholm. He went on to claim a silver medal in the event at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, and is also known and honoured throughout the world as the man who popularised the sport of surfing.
