    Sprint stars strut their stuff at Rio 2016

    In the men’s sprinting events in Rio, Usain Bolt claimed three more golds to cement his status as the greatest sprinter of all time while South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk broke a 17-year-old world record in the 400m. In the women’s competitions, Bolt’s compatriot Elaine Thompson took a sprint double in the 100m and 200m while Allyson Felix of the USA became the most decorated female athlete of all time.

    Sparkling van Niekerk shatters records in Rio

    Sometimes figures can do the work of explaining an athlete’s brilliance. In Wayde van Niekerk’s case, they speak for themselves: he is the only person in history to have run below 10 seconds in the 100m, below 20 seconds in the 200m and faster than 44 seconds over 400m – and a sparkling run in the latter gave the Rio crowd a special demonstration of his talents.
