    Luger Anne Abernathy made history in Salt Lake City with a performance that rewarded determination, endurance and fitness more than outright ability. She was never likely to win a medal, and nor did she expect to. Abernathy had pushed the limits simply by reaching these Games, and competing at the top level.

    High five for old man of the luge Hackl

    Georg Hackl was competing at his fifth Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. He had won a medal at each of the previous four, and his tally now stood at three golds and one silver. His reputation within the sport was sky-high. His debut had come as a 21-year-old representing West Germany. Now 35, and competing for a united Germany, he was regarded by many as the greatest luger of all time.

    Ice cool Strobl takes downhill gold

    Hermann Maier (AUT), who had been the best downhill skier in the four years since the Nagano Winter Games in 1998, was a notable absence in Salt Lake City. The Austrian was not just hugely charismatic but also, on his day, exceptionally fast. He had won the 1999 World Championship title and the 2001 World Cup, and was widely tipped to be one of the favourites for the 2002 Olympic title.

    After a long period battling for recognition among his country’s crop of talented speed skaters, Jochem Uytdehaage began to hit form a year before the 2002 Games. He was in his mid-twenties by the time he won the Dutch title and began to feature regularly in international competitions. Suddenly, he was winning a host of major titles.
