Albert Hill’s Double Olympic Gold - Athletics

British athlete Albert Hill was 35 by the time of the Antwerp 1920 Olympic Games. He had served for 3 years in France and had been in doubt to compete because of a previous shin injury just before the games.   Having made it to the Olympic Games, Hill had already taken gold in the 800 metres competition leaving favourites Earl Eby from the USA and Bevill Rudd from South Africa to take the silver and bronze medals, respectively.   For the 1500m final, the conditions were far from perfect, with a downpour that made the track soggy. However, supported by his fellow British athlete Philip Noel-Baker, Albert Hill gained a comfortable lead, taking the gold medal once again.   Albert Hill’s double Olympic gold in the 800 and 1500 metres was only achieved again by a British athlete in the Athens 2004 Olympic Games with Kelly Holmes.
