    Biebl writes her name in women’s Alpine history

    Competing at a time when the Alpine Skiing World Cup had yet to come into existence (it made its debut 1967), the Bavarian-born Heidi Biebl was one of the greatest skiers of her generation and the finest German since Christl Cranz, the queen of the slopes in the 1930s who had been crowned the first female Olympic Alpine skiing champion at Garmisch-Partenkichen 1936.

    Heggtveit opens Canada’s Alpine account

    Born in Ottawa (CAN), Anne Heggtveit had winter sports in her blood. Her father was Halvor Heggtveit, Canada’s Norwegian-born cross country skiing great of the 1930s, while her uncle was Bud Clark, who took part in the cross-country, Nordic combined and Alpine skiing events at Lake Placid 1932 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936.

    Arosa duo score giant slalom double

    Team-mates at Arosa Ski Club in Switzerland, Yvonne Rüegg and Roger Staub both had medals in their sights at Squaw Valley 1960. The 28-year-old Rüegg won the Swiss women’s downhill title in 1959, while Staub, five years her junior, came within nine tenths of a second of bronze in the men’s downhill at Cortina d’Ampezzo 1956, a race won by Toni Sailer of Austria. Staub went one better in the same event at the 1958 FIS World Championships at Bad Gastein (AUT), winning silver, while also picking up bronze in the giant slalom and the combined.

    Hinterseer flies the flag for Austria

    Born in Kitzbühel on 28 February 1932, Ernst Hinterseer was an apprentice carpenter and highly accomplished skier whose Austrian giant slalom title win in 1954 earned him a place in the national team for Cortina d’Ampezzo 1956. He could only finish sixth as his compatriots Toni Sailer, Andreas Molterer and Walter Schuster complete a clean sweep of the medals.
