    Chinese Duo Defends Olympic Title in C2 500m

    The Chinese duo, Meng Guanliang and Yang Wenjun, delight the crowd by claiming their second straight Olympic gold in C2 500m. Meng and Yang make a strong start, crossing the 250m mark with a half boat length advantage. They finish in 1:41.025 closely followed by the Russian pair, who receive the silver medal in 1:41.282.     Ma Lin of the People’s Republic of China wins the gold medal in the men’s table tennis final. Ma takes the first two games. Wang Hao, also of China, counters and wins game 3. Ma comes back to win games 4 and 5 to win the match 4 games to 1. Wang Liqin of China wins the bronze, which marks the first time one nation has claimed all three medals in the Olympic table tennis men’s singles event.

    Waldemar Cierpinski wins his second marathon

    Out of the 74 starting runners, only 53 finished the marathon at the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games.   After being left slightly behind the leading pack that had set an initial fiercely fast pace, Waldemar Cierpinski from East Germany was able to pass the leaders around the 36 kilometre mark.   Once Cierpinski passed the pack he kept his position and took his number 297 bib through the finish line to claim the gold medal.   As the East German had also won the marathon in the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games, he equalled the feat of marathon legend Abebe Bikila who had won two Olympic gold medals in Rome 1960 and Tokyo 1964.

    Katalin Kovacs and Natasa Janic of Hungary, succesfully retain their title, winning the women's K2 500m for the second consecutive time. The Hungarian crew, crosses the half way mark first, keeping the lead the rest of the race to win in 1:41.42, less than a second ahead of the Polish duo, who claims the silver medal.
