    Tokyo 1964 welcomes the world to the Olympic Stadium

    Under a magnificent blue autumn sky, the Opening Ceremony of the Games of the XVIII Olympiad was filled with exciting moments, in particular when Japanese athlete Yoshinori Sakai, born on 6 August 1945 and nicknamed “Hiroshima Baby”, lit the Olympic cauldron in a symbolic gesture of peace and hope. At the end of the Ceremony, Japanese jet planes formed the Olympic rings in the sky.

    Fontana and Choi reign supreme in women’s short track

    Italy’s Arianna Fontana won a medal of each colour at PyeongChang 2018 to take her overall Winter Games total to eight, more than any other woman has managed in the history of Olympic short track. The Republic of Korea’s teenage skater Choi Min-jeong sent the home fans at the Gangneung Ice Arena wild with two golds. And Suzanne Schulting won the 1,000m to give the Netherlands its first ever Olympic short track title.

    Schulting leads from the front to win women’s 1,000m title

    Suzanne Schulting of the Netherlands claimed an unexpected short track speed skating gold in the women’s 1,000m at PyeongChang 2018, held at the Gangneung Ice Arena on Thursday 22 February. The 20-year-old led from the start to claim the Olympic title from Canada’s Kim Boutin and Arianna Fontana of Italy.

    Today at PyeongChang 2018: Thursday 22 February

    On the ice today, the women’s ice hockey final, the men’s curling semi-finals, the short track men’s 500m, women’s 1,000m and men’s 5,000m relay finals take centre stage. On the snow, meanwhile, there are gold medals to be won in the women’s Big Air, men’s Alpine skiing slalom, the women’s Alpine Combined, the women’s biathlon relay, the team relay large hill/4x5km in Nordic combined, and the men’s ski halfpipe final.

    Republic of Korea win women’s 3,000m team relay gold

    There were jubilant scenes at the Gangneung Oval on Tuesday 20 February, as Republic of Korea produced a lightning-fast last lap to retain the Olympic women’s speed skating 3,000m team relay title they won at Sochi 2014.
