    Men’s biathlon: Bjørndalen makes history as hosts enjoy grand finale

    Ole Einar Bjørndalen confirmed his status as one of the all-time Winter Olympic greats, winning two more golds in Sochi to take his overall tally to 13 medals, more than any other winter athlete in history. Meanwhile Martin Fourcade added a pair of golds of his own, and Anton Shipulin spearheaded a Russian triumph in the relay on the final day of competition.

    Men’s speed skating: Dutch turn the Adler Arena orange

    Youth Olympic Games inspire Sochi successes

    Many of the athletes competing at Sochi 2014 gained their first taste of intense international competition in their mid-to-late teens at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games, held in Innsbruck (AUT) in 2012. Immersed in an Olympic adventure, they learned crucial values, rubbed shoulders with participants from all over the globe, and experienced the joy of appearing on podiums in a unique environment.

    Figure skating: Russians lead gold rush as teenagers rule the Iceberg

    Teenagers Julia Lipnitskaia and Adelina Sotnikova lit up the Iceberg Skating Palace, as Team Russia won three out of five golds on offer, including the inaugural team event. Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu became the youngest men’s champion in over half a century, while Charlie White and Meryl Davis blazed the ice dance trail for the USA.

    The Iceberg Skating Palace provided the setting for a scintillating short track programme, in which records came tumbling, as Victor An marked his return to the Olympic stage after an eight year gap in sensational fashion, winning three gold medals.

    Ski Jumping: Stoch does the double, as Vogt leaps into history

    Sochi 2014 saw women compete in the ski jumping for the first time in history, and they laid on a spectacular debut at RusSki Gorki, spearheaded by Germany’s Carina Vogt. In the men’s events, Polish ace Kamil Stoch underlined his status as current king of the hill, winning double gold. And Japan’s Noriaki Kasai won a pair of medals too – 20 years after his first!

    Luge: Lightning Loch leads the German charge

    For 17 days, the circuit at the Sanki Sliding Centre played host to luge, skeleton and bob. First up was the luge, where in addition to the men’s and women’s singles and the men’s doubles, there was also the intriguing prospect of the all-new mixed team event. The Germans always excel in the luge… and they didn’t disappoint.

    In a league of his own: A tribute to Ole Einar Bjørndalen

    With Norway’s victory in the new mixed relay event in Sochi on 19 February 2014, Ole Einar Bjørndalen took his Olympic medal tally to 13 and in doing so set a new benchmark for the most medals won at the Winter Games. Earlier at Sochi 2014 he had drawn level with the previous record holder, his compatriot and cross country skiing legend Bjørn Daehlie, Now though, he entered in a league of his own, confirming his status as the greatest Winter Olympian of all time.
