    Ledecky and HosszĂș sparkle in the Rio 2016 pool

    Winning four golds and five medals, the USA’s Katie Ledecky completed a historic 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle hat-trick, breaking two world records in the process. Not far behind was Hungary’s Katinka Hosszú, who lived up to her nickname of the “Iron Lady” by negotiating a punishing schedule to pick up three golds and four medals in total, setting world and Olympic records in the two individual medleys.

    China secure third straight table tennis grand slam

    In the table tennis competitions at Rio 2016, China once again took a clean sweep of the titles on offer. While defending champions Li Xiaoxia and Zhang Jike were beaten in the singles, compatriots Ding Ning and Ma Long ensured that their crowns stayed in China. In the team competitions, the four singles finalists powered to victory alongside Liu Shiwen in the women’s team and Xu Xin in the men’s team.

    Taekwondo firsts aplenty at Rio 2016

    The Rio 2016 taekwondo competition produced several ground-breaking achievements, with Ahmad Abughaush of Jordan and Cheick Sallah Cissé of Ivory Coast winning their countries’ first ever Olympic gold medals and Zhao Shuai scoring China’s maiden men’s gold in the sport, as did Radik Isaev for Azerbaijan. In the women’s events, Iran’s KIma Alizadeh and Egypt’s Hedaya Wahba scored notable firsts of their own, while Great Britain’s Jade Jones was the only fighter to retain a title.

    Phelps lights up the Rio 2016 pool

    The winner of six medals, five of them gold, the USA’s Michael Phelps was the undisputed star of the pool at Rio 2016. The most decorated athlete in the history of the Games, he left Brazil with 23 Olympic titles to his name and 28 medals in all. His latest clutch of achievements were among the many high points of a week in which the likes of team-mate Ryan Murphy, Australia’s Kyle Chalmers, Great Britain’s Adam Peaty, China’s Sun Yang, Singapore’s Joseph Schooling and Kazakhstan’s Dmitriy Balandin also excelled.

    IOC President Thomas Bach was in Paris, Sunday. The French capital is bidding to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2024. President Bach finished the day at a football match between refugees and French athletes organised by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.

    Beach volleyball lights up the Copacabana

    Generating excitement aplenty on the host city’s most famous beach, the Rio 2016 beach volleyball competitions left the local fans feeling mixed emotions. While Germany’s Kira Walkenhorst and Laura Ludwig beat Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas de Freitas to the women’s gold, home favourites Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt got the better of Italy’s Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo to win the men’s title.
