The Swiss ski jumper is the only person to have achieved two doubles at the Winter Games, eight years apart. He won his fourth title on 20 February 2010 in Vancouver, on Whistler’s big hill, leaving his rivals far behind, inscribing his name in golden letters in the Olympic history books.

On 19 February 2014 in Sochi, Ole Einar Bjørndalen was the artisan of Norway’s victory in the first ever Olympic biathlon mixed relay. Having already won the sprint ten days earlier, he took his eighth Olympic title and thirteenth medal, making him one of the greatest Olympic winter athletes of all time.

With eight Olympic podium places and four gold medals, no one has topped this achievement in Olympic Alpine skiing. From his first to his last title, Kjetil André Aamodt was a Super-G champion who turned expectations on their head. From the young 19-year-old unknown in Albertville 1992, to the 34-year-old outsider in Turin fourteen years later, he had to believe in himself when no one else did.

On 13 February 1998, in the downhill at the Games in Nagano, Hermann Maier crashed off the course in spectacular fashion, and the images of this made the news all over the world. But the Games went on for him – just a few days later he won two gold medals, in the super-G and giant slalom. And the legend of the “Herminator” would live on for many years to come.

With 67 Snowboarding World Cup victories, Karine Ruby holds a record that no one has yet come close to equalling. Her discipline made its Olympic debut at Nagano 1998, and the first women’s event was held on 10 February – a giant slalom on the snow of Mount Yakebitai. The 20-year-old French athlete won by some margin and wrote her name into the history books.

It’s certainly some record. Armin Zöggeler competed in luge at every Winter Games edition from 1994 to 2014: Lillehammer, Nagano, Salt Lake City, Turin, Vancouver and Sochi. And he took home a medal from each, including two golds. On 9 February 2014, at the Sanki Sliding Centre, the 40-year-old won bronze to make history with his sixth consecutive medal.

On 6 February 1972, Yukio Kasaya became Japan’s first ever champion at the Olympic Winter Games, with a comfortable victory in the normal hill event at the Miyanomori Ski Jump Stadium in Sapporo. For a country which, until that point, could boast only one winter medal, in Alpine skiing, this proved to be a historic day, as Akitsugu Konno and Seiji Aochi joined their compatriot on the podium for a remarkable triple success.

Do not quit, focus on the effort not the result, always cultivate interests outside sport and remember: you are a role model.
