    The extraordinary journey of Clara Hughes culminated with gold at Turin 2006

    On 25 February 2006, Clara Hughes was crowned Olympic champion in the 5,000m at the Olympic Oval in Turin. Her success in speed skating, winning a total of four medals came after a podium finish in road cycling in Atlanta, 10 years earlier. The Canadian champion is the only athlete to win multiple medals at both the Winter and Summer Games.

    On 6 February 1972, Yukio Kasaya became Japan’s first ever champion at the Olympic Winter Games, with a comfortable victory in the normal hill event at the Miyanomori Ski Jump Stadium in Sapporo. For a country which, until that point, could boast only one winter medal, in Alpine skiing, this proved to be a historic day, as Akitsugu Konno and Seiji Aochi joined their compatriot on the podium for a remarkable triple success.

    The reigning double Olympic champion in the triple jump, American Christian Taylor, won his fourth world title in Doha on 29 September 2019. Having recorded the second best-ever jump in the history of his discipline in 2015, with a leap of 18.21m, he now has his sights set on a third Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games, and is continuing his quest to beat the world record – 18.29m – held by Great Britain’s Jonathan Edwards since 1995.
