    Joan Benoit becomes an Olympic champion at the 1984 Games, when the women's marathon is first introduced as an Olympic sport. After recovering from a knee surgery, Benoit manages to cross the finish line first in 2:24.52, almost four minutes ahead of Grete Waitz. Rosa Mota of Portugal claims the bronze medal in 2:26.57.
