    Surprise gold for Myhrer as favourites fade in men’s slalom

    Andre Myhrer of Sweden collected a surprise gold at PyeongChang 2018 after pre-event favourites Marcel Hirscher (AUT) and Henrik Kristoffersen (NOR) stumbled in the Alpine skiing men’s slalom competition at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre on Thursday 22 February.

    Majestic Marcel untouchable in giant slalom

    Marcel Hirscher won a second gold medal at PyeongChang 2018 after leaving the Alpine skiing giant slalom field in his wake with another technical masterclass. The Austrian posted a combined time of 2:18.04, a full 1.27 seconds ahead of Norwegian Henrik Kristoffersen, who won silver, and Alexis Pinturault from France, who claimed bronze.

    The legend of Norway’s Attacking Vikings lives on

    In climbing on to the podium at PyeongChang 2018, Ragnhild Mowinckel and Nina Haver-Løseth won Norway’s first Olympic medals in women’s Alpine skiing in 82 years. The two were inspired in their childhood years by the exploits of the so-called “Attacking Vikings”, the new wave of Norwegian Alpine skiers who took the country to the top of the sport in the early 1990s and have helped it stay there ever since.

    Hirscher and Shiffrin lead the way in Alpine skiing’s technical events

    Making the headlines in the Alpine skiing technical events at PyeongChang 2018 was Austria’s Marcel Hirscher, who landed the men’s combined and giant slalom titles, and the USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin, who added giant slalom gold to the slalom crown she won at Sochi 2014 before taking silver in the women’s combined behind Switzerland’s Michelle Gisin. Swedish skiers excelled in the slalom events, as Frida Hansdotter won the women’s and Andre Myhrer the men’s, while the inaugural mixed team event went to Switzerland.

    Today at PyeongChang 2018: Thursday 22 February

    On the ice today, the women’s ice hockey final, the men’s curling semi-finals, the short track men’s 500m, women’s 1,000m and men’s 5,000m relay finals take centre stage. On the snow, meanwhile, there are gold medals to be won in the women’s Big Air, men’s Alpine skiing slalom, the women’s Alpine Combined, the women’s biathlon relay, the team relay large hill/4x5km in Nordic combined, and the men’s ski halfpipe final.
