    26 January 1924: Charles Jewtraw was the inaugural winner at the Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix

    Today, we are celebrating the anniversary of the first gold medal given at the Olympic Winter Games on the morning of 26 January 1924 in Chamonix – for the 500m speed skating event, won against all expectations by the American from Lake Placid, Charles Jewtraw. Here is the first page in the record book containing the Olympic exploits accomplished over almost a century on the snow and ice.

    A quadruple Axel in competition? “Not anytime soon” for world champion Nathan Chen

As the discipline evolves, the number of quadruple jumps is increasing; but there is one that has never yet been performed: the quadruple Axel, already the most difficult jump as a triple. Nathan Chen, the 2018 world champion and quad specialist, does not think anyone will achieve this anytime soon.

    Hanyu makes history, Zagitova wins teen duel

    Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu made history not once but twice at PyeongChang 2018. By winning the men’s figure skating singles gold, he became the first athlete in 66 years to retain the title and also won the thousandth Olympic Winter Games gold medal event. In the women’s competition, meanwhile, the honours went to 15-year-old Alina Zagitova (OAR), who won a high-quality duel with compatriot and fellow teenager Evgenia Medvedeva.

    Hanyu edges out YOG star for skating gold

    Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN) won the gold medal in the men’s single figure skating at PyeongChang 2018 to add to the title he won at Sochi 2014. It happened to be 1000th medal event in the history of Olympic Winter games.

    Today at PyeongChang 2018: Saturday 17 February

    On a day with something to suit everyone, the medal action kicks off with the free programme in the men’s figure skating and the women’s super-G, and draws to a close with the men’s large hill individual at the Alpensia Ski Jumping Centre. In between these exciting events come the women’s biathlon mass start, the women’s 4x5km relay in cross-country skiing, the women’s ski slopestyle and the final two rounds of the women’s skeleton. Meanwhile, home fans will be looking forward to the women’s 1,500m and men’s 1,000m short track finals.

    Figure skating: Russians lead gold rush as teenagers rule the Iceberg

    Teenagers Julia Lipnitskaia and Adelina Sotnikova lit up the Iceberg Skating Palace, as Team Russia won three out of five golds on offer, including the inaugural team event.
