    Felicia Ballanger leaves on the highest note – Women’s Track Cycling

    With a name inspired by the former champion cyclist and Olympian Felice Gimondi, Felicia Ballanger was a destined cyclist from birth.   Previous to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, Ballanger was already a two-time Olympian and had won the gold medal in Atlanta 1996, four years before. Could she get the gold medal for France once again?   It was her final international appearance on the cycling track and with a Sydney 2000 Olympic Games gold medal and new Olympic record, Felicia Ballanger left the track on a high note.

    Ko Willems sprints for cycling gold - Track cycling - Paris 1924 Olympic Games

    At the Paris 1924 Olympic Games, track cycling was a distant relative to what we see in the current Olympics. Cyclists competed in an outdoor velodrome without any the protective gear such as helmets, which we see for current athletes.   For 50 kilometer race, the Dutch duo Ko Willems and Jan Maas had previously defined a race plan in which Maas would attack for the lead, getting other athletes fatigued earlier in the race. Meanwhile Willems, who was a strong sprinter, would finish the race.   As cyclists were lapped by the front pack, they would leave the track which narrowed down the competition to the final 15 athletes. In the final laps, the competitors began their sprint lead by Wyld and Alden from Great Britain, De Martino from Italy and Willems on the outside, all equal.   Following their initial plan, Ko Willems' sprint put him ahead of the three taking the gold medal for the Netherlands.

And her comeback was simply one of the most amazing performances ever seen in Olympic women’s cycling.   She began by breaking the world record in the semifinals of the pursuit and taking the gold medal in the final. During the points race, she moved up from a fifth place in the final sprint to the silver medal.   When Zijlaard-van Moorsel switched to the road, she won the road time trial. And finally, in an exciting road race that ended with a photo-finish contest to define the silver and bronze medalists, Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel won the Olympic gold medal.
