    Olympic sport today looks very different to when the Games were revived by Pierre de Coubertin at the end of the 19th century. The competitors are fitter and stronger. The equipment and venues are more technologically advanced. And gone are events such as tug of war and underwater swimming, replaced by modern, youthful disciplines like BMX and 3x3 basketball.

    Women’s freestyle skiers turn on the style at PyeongChang 2018

    France’s Perrine Laffont kicked off the women’s freestyle skiing events at PyeongChang 2018 by claiming moguls gold, before Cassie Sharpe of Canada won the halfpipe title. Sarah Hofflin and Mathilde Gremaud made it a Swiss one-two in the slopestyle and Hanna Huskova of Belarus prevailed in the aerials competition. The competition ended with Canada’s Kelsey Serwa topping the podium in ski cross.

    Men’s freestyle skiers fly high at Phoenix Snow Park

    Canadian moguls master Mikael Kingsbury finally ended his quest for Olympic gold, while the USA’s David Wise retained his halfpipe crown. Norway’s Øystein Braaten reigned supreme in the slopestyle, another Canadian, Brady Leman prevailed in the ski cross and Oleksandr Abramenko won the aerials to give Ukraine just its third ever Winter Olympic gold.

    Aerials star Lassila brings curtain down on 16-year Olympic odyssey

    Australian aerial’s skier Lydia Lassila took a huge breath, looked down at her coach and then went for it, unsure if this would be the final jump of an illustrious career spanning five editions of the Olympic Winter Games. It turned out that it was.

    Ukraine’s Abramenko flies to freestyle ski aerials gold

    Oleksandr Abramenko secured Ukraine’s first gold medal of PyeongChang 2018 as he soared to freestyle skiing glory in the men’s aerials at Phoenix Park on Sunday 18 February. Completing the podium were Jia Zongyang of China in second and Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) Ilia Burov in third.

    Today at PyeongChang 2018: Sunday 18 February

    Men's snow events dominate the programme today, with Alpine skiing's giant slalom, biathlon's 15km mass start, freestyle skiing’s slopestyle and aerials, and the cross-country skiing relay. The only women’s medal event is the high-octane 500m speed skating.
