This was marked by the Australian women’s rugby sevens team victory in the final against New Zealand, for the sport’s triumphal return to the Games after a 92-year absence. Kohei Uchimura and Japan dominated the men’s all-around team gymnastics competition. There were further exploits in the swimming events, and Carioca judoka Rafaela Silva delighted the whole of Brazil.

A look back at the second day of the Games in Rio, a year after that Sunday 7 August 2016 when Michael Phelps, who had come out of retirement to take part in his fifth Games, played a decisive role in the second leg of the 4x100m freestyle, helping the USA to beat France, unbeaten in the event since London 2012. Chinese diver Wu Minxia won her fourth consecutive title in the 3m synchronised diving; Korea’s female archers won their eighth title in eight editions; Majlinda Kelmendi gave Kosovo a flying start in the judo; and Simone Biles was already dazzling everyone!

Clarisse Agbegnenou, a member of the 2017 European Judo Championship gold medal-winning women’s team, has a clear blueprint for success as she seeks to make France the mixed team to beat at its inaugural event at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Colombia’s Oscar Figueroa and Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Nurudinov became the first men from their countries to win weightlifting golds at Rio 2016, while China and Iran’s lifters collected two golds apiece and Georgia won two medals for the first time in any Olympic event in the heaviest category.

The throwing events at Rio 2016 produced some stellar performances with many of the contests going down to the wire, and the athletes having to demonstrate nerves of steel as well as consummate technique and superlative strength.

The Rio 2016 taekwondo competition produced several ground-breaking achievements, with Ahmad Abughaush of Jordan and Cheick Sallah Cissé of Ivory Coast winning their countries’ first ever Olympic gold medals and Zhao Shuai scoring China’s maiden men’s gold in the sport, as did Radik Isaev for Azerbaijan. In the women’s events, Iran’s KIma Alizadeh and Egypt’s Hedaya Wahba scored notable firsts of their own, while Great Britain’s Jade Jones was the only fighter to retain a title.

Serving up historic firsts for Kosovo and the Czech Republic, an emotional win for Brazil, Japan’s return to the limelight and a second gold for a French legend, the Rio 2016 judo competition had it all.

From the South African runner Wayde Van Niekerk, who broke the world record in the men’s 400m, to the Fiji men’s rugby sevens team, who won their NOC’s first ever gold medal, Rio 2016 was awash with records and landmark moments.

Radik Isaev won the first taekwondo gold for Azerbaijan in men’s +80kg, while Chinese fighter Zheng Shuyin beat experienced Mexican Maria del Rosario Espinoza in the women’s +67kg final.

Three world and Olympic records fell and an Olympic champion was deposed on the final night of the Rio 2016 weightlifting tournament on 16 August.
