    On 6 February 1972, Yukio Kasaya became Japan’s first ever champion at the Olympic Winter Games, with a comfortable victory in the normal hill event at the Miyanomori Ski Jump Stadium in Sapporo. For a country which, until that point, could boast only one winter medal, in Alpine skiing, this proved to be a historic day, as Akitsugu Konno and Seiji Aochi joined their compatriot on the podium for a remarkable triple success.

    Women’s monobob – a new Olympic discipline is making headway

    Olympic fans were able to watch solo bobsleigh at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Lillehammer 2016 and Lausanne 2020. The women’s event is now on the programme of the Winter Games in Beijing in 2022, and unlike other bobsleigh events, the athletes use a bob that is identical to those of all their competitors, giving pride of place to the driving, with the value of the equipment having no bearing.
