    Men’s Alpine skiing: Mayer opener and Matt finish ensure an Austrian Alpine double

    The five events – downhill, super-G, super combined, giant slalom and slalom - produced five different winners, underlining the intensity of the competition on the slopes of Rosa Khutor. They included the oldest ever Alpine gold medallist, the oldest to win a medal of any colour, and the youngest male skier to feature on the podium. At the top of the podium, there was long awaited super giant joy for Ted Ligety and three genuine surprises.

    Sochi 2014, Day 15: What’s on this Saturday?

    The penultimate day of Sochi 2014 kicks off with a new Olympic event, as Rosa Khutor Extreme Park hosts the men’s and women’s snowboard parallel slalom competitions. At around the same time, the world’s leading female cross-country skiers will set off for the 30km mass start, which will be followed by the men’s 4x7.5km biathlon relay, with the men’s and women’s speed skating team pursuit competitions then taking place at the Adler Arena. In Alpine skiing, meanwhile, it is men’s slalom day at Rosa Khutor, while there is a bronze medal up for grabs in men’s ice hockey at the Bolshoi Ice Dome. Finally, the four-man bobsleigh competition gets up and running at the Sanki Sliding Centre with the teams completing legs one and two.

    Sochi 2014, Day 7: What’s on this Friday?

    Day seven kicks off at Rosa Khutor with the men’s super combined. From there it’s on to the Laura Cross-Country Ski & Biathlon Centre for cross-country skiing and the men’s 15km classic, to be followed by the women’s 15km individual biathlon event. The spotlight then falls on the Sanki Sliding Centre, where the medals will be decided in the women’s skeleton. The free skate brings the men’s individual figure skating competition to a close at the Iceberg Skating Palace, with the women’s freestyle skiing aerials also taking place in the evening.

    Höfl-Riesch bows out on a high

    On 20 March 2014, Maria Höfl-Riesch confirmed that she was hanging up her skis. Having claimed her third Olympic gold medal a month earlier, and then added a fifth FIS World Cup small crystal globe to her tally, the 29-year-old was leaving at the pinnacle of her sport. In her own understated words, it was “a good moment to complete my career and start a new stage of my life.” We look back at her decade at the top of the women’s Alpine skiing scene.
