    Gwladys Epangue: ‘A unique moment of sharing’

    Now the co-chair of the French National Olympic Committee’s Athletes’ Commission, Gwladys Epangue won Olympic women’s taekwondo bronze in the 67kg category at Beijing 2008. A two-time world champion who also appeared at Athens 2004 and Rio 2016, Epangue recalls the excitement she felt at the Closing Ceremony of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in the Chinese capital.

    Taekwondo firsts aplenty at Rio 2016

    The Rio 2016 taekwondo competition produced several ground-breaking achievements, with Ahmad Abughaush of Jordan and Cheick Sallah Cissé of Ivory Coast winning their countries’ first ever Olympic gold medals and Zhao Shuai scoring China’s maiden men’s gold in the sport, as did Radik Isaev for Azerbaijan. In the women’s events, Iran’s KIma Alizadeh and Egypt’s Hedaya Wahba scored notable firsts of their own, while Great Britain’s Jade Jones was the only fighter to retain a title.

    Isaev and Zheng grab final taekwondo golds

    Chiang Nien-Hsin and Bozhidar Andreev Chiang grab weightlifting gold

    Chinese Taipei and Bulgaria won the two weightlifting gold medals on a day that featured a whistling competitor and celebratory backflips. Chiang Nien-Hsin (TPE) was never seriously challenged in winning gold in the women’s 58kg, before Bozhidar Andreev (BUL) dominated the clean and jerk category to take the men’s 69kg title a couple of hours later.
