    Rio 2016 - Day 3: Australia writes a chapter of Olympic history

    Relive day three of the Olympic Games in Rio, Monday 8 August, on olympic.org. This was marked by the Australian women’s rugby sevens team victory in the final against New Zealand, for the sport’s triumphal return to the Games after a 92-year absence. Kohei Uchimura and Japan dominated the men’s all-around team gymnastics competition. There were further exploits in the swimming events, and Carioca judoka Rafaela Silva delighted the whole of Brazil.

    Japanese shine in Rio 2016 women’s freestyle wrestling

    In Rio Kaori Icho joined a select group of athletes to have won four consecutive Olympic titles as she preserved her unbeaten record at the Games. She spearheaded a Japanese charge on the medals, with only Helen Maroulis (USA), who denied legend Saori Yoshida a fourth Olympic title, and heavyweight Erica Wiebe (CAN) standing in the way of a sweep of the golds.

    Taekwondo firsts aplenty at Rio 2016

    The Rio 2016 taekwondo competition produced several ground-breaking achievements, with Ahmad Abughaush of Jordan and Cheick Sallah Cissé of Ivory Coast winning their countries’ first ever Olympic gold medals and Zhao Shuai scoring China’s maiden men’s gold in the sport, as did Radik Isaev for Azerbaijan. In the women’s events, Iran’s KIma Alizadeh and Egypt’s Hedaya Wahba scored notable firsts of their own, while Great Britain’s Jade Jones was the only fighter to retain a title.
