YOG on the Road to London 2012 visits Auckland, New Zealand

Joined by special travelling companion London 2012 mascot Wenlock, the YOG on the Road team made the journey to Auckland, New Zealand, this week to meet not one, not two, but three former YOG athletes who are heading for the Olympic Games this summer.

Historically a country that has achieved considerable sporting success despite its small population (at roughly 4.4 million it is just over half that of London), we are pleased to report that the next generation appears to have picked up the baton with vigour!

Indeed, there is clearly something in the water in this part of the world, and two athletes we met are, quite literally, causing quite a splash: swimmer Matt Stanley, who set two new records at the National Championships to qualify for the Games; and rower Eve MacFarlane, who gained her spot with an impressive seventh place finish at the World Championships in the quadruple sculls.

Out of the water and on dry land, we headed over to the hockey pitch, where Rhiannon Dennison gave us a snapshot of the silky skills that secured her position as the youngest member of New Zealand’s Black Sticks hockey team.
