YOG on the Road talks to Croatian pole vaulter Ivan Horvat
As far as Olympic legends go, you don’t get much bigger that Sergey Bubka. The Ukrainian pole vaulter broke the world record an incredible 35 times and, to this day, he still holds both the outdoor and indoor world records set in 1994 and 1993 respectively!
So, to be personally invited by the great man to train at his training camp is something of an honour. Such an honour was bestowed on Croatian pole vaulter Ivan Horvat after he met the sports star at the Singapore Youth Olympic Games, and it was an opportunity he grabbed with both hands.
“Meeting the great Bubka was very shocking to say the least but it was fun,” Ivan recalls.
The training camp obviously paid off, as the 18-year-old was recently selected to represent his county at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
“[Qualifying for the Games] felt amazing and I’m looking forward to meeting all the great pole vaulters there.”
Watch out for Ivan in the next episode of “Youth Olympic Games... The Journey Continues” coming soon, as we catch up with the young athletes heading to London 2012 at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona this weekend.
