World Conference on Sport and Environment: five days to go !

The 6th IOC World Conference on Sport and Environment will be held from 9 to 11 November 2005 at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya. This edition follows on from the one held in Turin, Italy, in December 2003, where delegates from all five continents shared experiences and ideas on sustainable development in and through sport, and how it could be better promoted and achieved. The IOC is pleased to organise this conference with the partnership of UNEP.

Analysis of progress made in sport

The purpose of the Conference will be to analyse progress made in sport and environment generally, and in the Olympic Movement in particular. It will discuss major themes related to policy support, strengthening of partnerships, developments and research. It will also outline priority issues on sport and environment and address relevant strategies and policy guidelines for the following two years.

The programme foresees an Opening ceremony on Wednesday 9 November in the evening. On the Thursday, plenary and parallel sessions will be held throughout the day. The recommendations of the conference will be adopted at a plenary session on Friday 11 November, followed by the Closing Ceremony.
