Women's Basketball: China, Japan and Korea qualify for Athens 2004
The Chinese women's basketball team followed in the footsteps of their men's team by winning the FIBA Asia Championship and qualifying for Athens. In the final against host Japan, China won 92-80, adding one more title to its collection. Korea earned the third Olympic spot by winning the bronze medal game against Chinese Taipei with 88-59.
Field of 12 teams completed
These three teams complete the field of the Olympic basketball tournament for women in Athens 2004. The teams qualified are: Australia, Brazil, People's Republic of China, Czech Republic, Greece, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Nigeria, Russia, Spain, and the USA.
Draw for the two groups on 26 January
The draw for the two groups of six will take place next Monday, 26 January 2004, at the Conference Centre of the Athens Organising Committee (ATHOC).
From 14 to 28 August 2004
The basketball tournament at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games will last 15 days - from 14 to 28 August. The preliminary rounds and the games for places 9 and 10, as well as 11 and 12, will take up 11 game days (14-24 August). They will be held in the Indoor Arena of the Helliniko Olympic Complex, which has a total capacity of 15,000 seats. The quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals will be held on the four final game days (25-28 August) at the Olympic Indoor Hall, within the Athens Olympic Sports Complex (OCO), where the total capacity is 18,000 seats.
