Volleyball: qualifications for Athens launched
With the World Cups – women’s and men’s - taking place in Japan, the qualification for the Olympic volleyball tournament in Athens is launched. The top three teams of these tournaments will be, together with the host country Greece, the first of twelve teams qualified for the Olympic Games tournament.
Greece, China, Brazil and the USA
In the Women’s World Cup tournament, which ended on 15 November in Osaka (Japan), the following countries qualified for Athens: China, Brazil and the United States of America. The men’s tournament is still currently taking place.
After these World Cup tournaments, each of the five Confederations will organise a Continental Olympic Qualification tournament. The five winners of each tournament will qualify for the Games. These tournaments will take place between 1 December 2003 and 15 January 2004. Three additional places will be decided at World Olympic Qualification tournaments organised by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) in May/June 2004.
Peace and Friendship Stadium
During the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games, the volleyball competition will take place at the Peace and Friendship Stadium at the Faliro Coastal Zone Olympic Complex, which has a total capacity of 14,000 seats. The competition programme will span over 16 days, from 14 to 29 August 2004.
