The ski mountaineering elite from 31 nations will gather together this week in Villars, Switzerland, for the Ski Mountaineering World Championships, taking place from 9 to 16 March.
This event marks the last preparation event this season for the Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 and the last qualifying event for the ski mountaineering athletes hoping to claim their spot at next year’s Youth Olympic Games.
This week will also be the true test of the venue ahead of Lausanne 2020 on the Col de Bretaye, and will see the youth categories battled out in the individual race. The athletes will face the same course at Lausanne 2020 with the cadets and the junior women facing a positive height gain of 897 metres and the junior men 1,465 metres.
The Lausanne 2020 team were there in full force for the opening sprint event on Sunday, with Yodli making appearances to cheer on the athletes. Meanwhile Lausanne 2020 President Virginie Faivre also tested out the sport by ski mountaineering up to the event with IOC Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi.
