VANCOUVER 2010: The Next Winter Games Will Be Canadian
With the successful XX Olympic Winter Games – Torino 2006, now drawing to a close, all eyes are slowly starting to turn towards the Host City for the XXI Olympic Winter Games – Vancouver. The next Winter Games will be Canadian. Coming 22 years after the Winter Games last visited Canada, the people of the Organising Committee for the XXI Olympic Winter Games – Vancouver 2010 (VANOC) are gearing up to meet the challenges that they will face over the coming four years as they lead Vancouver and Whistler to Games time in 2010.
Vision and Mission
The Vancouver Games are driven by a strong vision. With its mission statement being; and to touch the soul of the nation and inspire the world by creating and delivering an extraordinary Olympic and Paralympic experience with lasting legacies.
The ice events and two skiing events will be held in venues in the Vancouver area, while the Alpine, Nordic, sliding and Paralympic events will all be held in Whistler, which lies about 120 kilometres north of Vancouver. Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Olympic Games will be held at Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium, while athletes’ villages and media facilities will be available in both locations.
Sustainability, Culture and Education
VANOC intends to broaden and strengthen the focus of sustainability beyond environmental stewardship to include social responsibility, economic opportunity, sports development and health promotion. In line with this, VANOC will also be preparing a cultural programme and a youth and education programme. In addition, these initiatives are also supported by 2010 Legacies Now, a group that came out of the Vancouver 2010 bid corporation and which is closely associated with VANOC.
The benefits of the Vancouver Games will be numerous, but a few key benefits will be in the areas of tourism, transportation, housing and the economy. It is also important to note that all of Vancouver 2010’s venues are being built with legacy and post-Games usage in mind.
Promises Will Be Kept
Commenting on the Vancouver 2010 Games, IOC Coordination Commission Chairman René Fasel said, “The IOC expects the winter sports world will be delighted with what it sees in Vancouver. We have been pleased to see construction starting and a solid team of commercial and non-commercial partners showing support for the project.” He continued, “Throughout Vancouver 2010’s bid and preparation work, we have recognised strong promises to put athletes first and to create sustainable legacies for Canadian sport. The IOC is confident Vancouver 2010’s promises will be kept, for the benefit of local communities and for sport across Canada.”
Vancouver will host the XXI Olympic Winter Games from 12 to 28 February 2010. The mountain events will take place in Whistler, which will also host the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games from 12 to 21 March 2010.
