VANCOUVER 2010: Less Than 5 Years To Go Until 2010 Games
The Organising Committee for the XXI Olympic Winter Games – Vancouver 2010 (VANOC) has been celebrating the five-year countdown to the start of their Olympic Games this week. The Vancouver Games will begin on 12 February 2010 and will run until 28 February 2010. However, while five years might seem like a long time, there is a lot to be done between now and then.
The Symbols of the Games
The next major milestone for VANOC will be the unveiling of the 2010 Games emblem, which is expected to happen sometime in the spring of this year. The emblem will form the corner stone of VANOC’s brand, along with the Games mascot that is expected to be selected during 2007. The last major symbol of the Games will be the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay, which VANOC will organise sometime between the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010.
Construction and Upgrades
One of the most visible elements of an Olympic Games is the stadia that must be built or renovated in order to host the competitions. For VANOC, the construction projects will begin this summer, with the start of construction on the Nordic competition site in Whistler and the sliding track for bobsleigh, luge and skeleton. This will be followed by the start of construction at the UBC Winter Sports Centre, the Richmond Speed Skating Oval, the curling venue and the Olympic Villages in Whistler and Vancouver. 2007 will also see the beginning of upgrade work on General Motors Place, one of the sites of Olympic Ice Hockey.
Observation and Organisation
Alongside the physical element of the construction of venues, VANOC will also have to organise the operations for the Games. They will be helped in this task by their participation in observation programmes at the Turin and Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2006 and 2008 respectively. They will then have to enact a volunteer recruitment programme in order to recruit an estimated 25,000 volunteers for the Games, launch the ticket sales for the Games and accredit an estimated 10,000 members of the media, even before the Games themselves begin.
In order to give the athletes the best possible conditions in which to compete at the Games in 2010, VANOC plan to have the venues completed for training purposes during the 2007/2008 Winter period. This will then be followed up by the official test events for the 2010 Games, which will take place during the following winter of 2008/2009. This will then be crowned by the hosting of the XXI Winter Olympic Games in 2010, when the medals up for grabs will be real Olympic gold.
