Two years to go until the IX Paralympic Winter Games
There are now only 730 days to go until the Opening Ceremony of the IX Paralympic Winter Games, which will be held from 10 to 19 March 2006.
Five Paralympic disciplines
The competitions in the five Paralympic disciplines will be held on the very same pistes and in the very same facilities as their Olympic counterparts. The Alpine skiing will take place in Sestriere, cross-country skiing and biathlon in San Sicario, curling in Pinerolo, and hockey at the Turin Esposizioni. Around 600 athletes are expected to compete, representing over 40 different nationalities.
Important test events next week
In order to prepare for this major event, TOROC will be testing its sports and logistics structures during the finals of the Skiing World Cup for Disabled Athletes. This event will be held in Sestriere from 17 to 19 March 2004. “The numbers are smaller”, explained Tiziana Nasi, President of the Operative Committee for the Turin 2006 Paralympics, “but the 120 accredited athletes, who come with guides and companions, making a total of more than 200 people, will make it possible for us to test both our sports and logistics structures.”
Seize the occasion to get a better understanding of disabled sport
“Above all, however, these finals will make it possible for us to allow all those people who want to watch and follow the competitions to get to know the best disabled skiers in the world. We have invited the schools in the valleys and from Turin, and we hope many students will come along to Sestriere.”
