Turin 2006: this winter's sports appointments
The Olympic mountains are preparing for the Games with an intense winter of sports events to be held in almost all the localities involved in the Games. In some cases these will serve as the first trials of the sites where the Games will take place in 2006.
Bobsleigh, skeleton and luge in Cesana
Expectations are great in Cesana, where the three disciplines of bobsleigh, skeleton and luge will put to the test in rapid succession the 1,345-metre course just completed: first the bob, with the two-man and four-man team races, followed by the skeleton single World Cup races from 20 to 23 January. Finally, on 5 and 6 February, it will be the turn of the Luge World Cup, featuring the singles and doubles races, for men and women.
Biathlon in Cesana-San Sicario
The town dominated by the Chaberton Fort will be holding the dress rehearsals for the biathlon contest: in the Cesana-San Sicario area from 9 to 13 February, the relay, individual and pursuit races will be run by men and women for the IBU World Cup.
Women skiing in San Sicario-Fraiteve
At the San Sicario-Fraiteve site, still in the Cesana district, races will be held for the Alpine Skiing World Cup calendar - the women will be skiing in a super G and two downhills (one valid for the combined).
Cross-country skiing, Nordic combined and ski jumping in Pragelato
Pragelato is the other town of the valleys involved in the sport events, thanks to the World Cup test competitions valid for the disciplines of cross-country skiing, Nordic combined and ski jumping. On 22 and 23 January, it will be the turn of the specialists of Nordic skiing and the weekend of 11 and 12 February will see the protagonists of ski jumping and combined. Then, from 26 to 28 January, the Paralympic Games Sport Events are scheduled for the biathlon and cross-country skiing specialties.
Snowboarding in Bardonecchia
Following on from last year’s World Cup finals, snowboarding will be back to test the facilities at Bardonecchia for a FIS test event planned for 10 and 11 February; on the programme are the giant slalom, half pipe and parallel events.
Freestyle ski competitions in Sauze d’Oulx
At Sauze d’Oulx, on 18 and 19 February, the new Jouvenceaux course, finished only a few months ago, will host the moguls and jumps trials for the freestyle champions.
Curling in Pinerolo
The mountain sports events will come to an end down in the valleys, in Pinerolo, at the “gate” of the Olympic System of Turin 2006, where the town’s new "Palacurling” will be tried out for the Curling World Championships.
