The Youth Olympic flame arrived today at Geneva International Airport following its lighting by the rays of the sun in a ceremony held at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, Greece, yesterday. The touchdown on the Geneva Airport runway marked the first stop in Switzerland ahead of the 110-day Torch Tour.
Representatives from the Canton of Vaud, the Canton of Geneva, the City of Lausanne, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Lausanne 2020, Swiss Olympic, Geneva Airport and SWISS Romandie were present to welcome the flame.
The flame arrived on board a SWISS aircraft specially chartered for the occasion; and a press conference was subsequently held inside the terminal, focusing on the universal message of peace and the Olympic values that the flame will now carry around all 26 cantons of Switzerland and over to neighbouring France.
With a fast connection between Geneva Airport and Lausanne, the flame soon made its next stop – thanks to the Swiss rail network – where it will remain, in the Olympic Capital, before starting the official Torch Tour on 21 September.
