The World Conference on Olympic and Sport Volunteerismopens next Monday in New York
Lausanne, 9 November 2001 - In the framework of the year 2001, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of Volunteers, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in cooperation with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), is organising a World Conference on Olympic and Sport Volunteerism from 12 to 14 November 2001 in the city of New York (United States of America).
The aim of the Conference is to review and analyse the contribution of volunteers to the development of sport and physical education and the organisation of the Olympic Games, world, regional and national sports competitions and to formulate projects for the future.
The very foundation of the Olympic Movement is volunteerism. Representatives of the Organising Committees for the Olympic Games in Salt lake City in 2002, in Athens in 2004, in Torino in 2006 and in Beijing in 2008 are among the main speakers at the Conference.
