The IOC President in Doha

After Kuwait and the IOC Executive Board meeting (EB), IOC President Jacques Rogge went to Qatar, Doha, which is hosting the 15th edition of the Asian Games from 1 to 15 December 2006. It is the second visit to Doha for President Rogge. Indeed, last year he attended the inauguration of the Aspire Sports Dome, a centre for high-level professional athletes’ education and training.
On 1 December, President Rogge was received at the Royal Palace by HH the Emir of Qatar, Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, in the presence of the Heir Apparent, HH Sheik Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, who is also an IOC member. The discussions centred of course on the Asian Games, a major sports event on the continent, as well as the development of sport in Qatar. President Rogge was accompanied by members of the EB, the President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Sheik Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, as well as several IOC members currently staying in Doha.
Also on the presidential programme are the Opening Ceremony of the Asian Games in Doha this evening in the Khalifa Stadium, the OCA General Assembly, and a visit to the athletes’ village and several competition venues.
