The IOC Athletes’ Commission – attracting Olympians

Thirty-one athletes are candidates for the IOC Athletes’ Commission elections, which will be held during the Games in Beijing in 2008. Four places will be available, replacing Sergey Bubka, Robert Ctvrtlik, Barbara Kendall and Alexander Popov.

Athletes today wish to play an active role in the world of sport. They want more than ever to express their opinions, to have their voice heard within the Olympic Movement.  Some of sport’s top names are ready to commit themselves to this role if they are elected next August, as you will discover below in the list of 31 candidates.

Elected by their peers
Only National Olympic Committees (NOCs) with an Athletes’ Commission can put forward a candidate. To be eligible, the candidates must have taken part in the Athens 2004 Games or be taking part in the Beijing 2008 Games.

All the athletes participating in the Games in 2008 will be able to vote. They will have to vote for four candidates from four different sports, in order to ensure varied representation of the sports on the Olympic programme.  Voting offices will be set up in each of the three Olympic Villages in Beijing, Qingdao and Hong Kong, as well as in the four cities hosting the football competitions. After acceptance by the IOC Session, the four elected athletes will become IOC members for the same duration as their term of office on the Commission, i.e. eight years.

The athletes’ voice
Created in 1981, the IOC Athletes' Commission is the link between the Olympic athletes and the IOC and serves as the athletes' voice within the Olympic Movement. Since 1996, the majority of the Commission’s members (12 out of 19) have been elected by their peers during an edition of the Olympic Games.
