Thank you Greece! Thank you Athens!

The Athens Games have been universally appreciated for their excellent quality from the point of view of their organisation, warm hospitality, the excellence of the sports results, and the image transmitted worldwide.

Thanks to the Greek people
In his closing speech, the IOC President thanked the Greek people, the City of Athens and the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games for their achievements.

Olympic Cup to the people of Athens
At the Closing Ceremony, the IOC awarded the Olympic Cup to the people of Athens in recognition of the commitment of the whole city to Olympism. The origin of this Cup goes back to the time of the founder of the Olympic Movement, Pierre de Coubertin, who established this Cup to recognise the particular merits of institutions or associations and their services rendered to sport and the whole Olympic Movement.

Olympic Order to Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki
The President of the Organising Committee for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad in Athens, Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, was presented with the Olympic Order by the IOC President.
