Table tennis Round of 16 produces thrills aplenty

In the table tennis competition on 18 August Chiu Ssu-Hua (TPE), Kilian Ort (GER) and Hugo Calderano (BRA) all enjoyed dramatic victories in the Round of 16 at Wutaishan.


In the women’s competition, Chiu needed seven sets to overcome her opponent from Republic of Korea, Park Seri. The Chinese Taipei player went down 11-3 in the fifth set, but recovered her composure to take the remaining two sets, 11-3, 11-9 for victory.

Other women's winners on the day were Tamolwan Khetkhuan (THA), Lily Zhang (USA), Doo Hoi Kem (HKG), Adina Diaconu (ROU), Miyu Kato (JPN), Lea Rakovac (CRO) and Liu Gaoyang (CHN).

In the men's competition, Germany’s Ort lost three of the first four sets to Diogo Chen of Portugal, but rallied superbly to take all of the remaining three sets for a dramatic win.

Hugo Calderano (BRA) and Padasak Tanviriyavechakul (THA) also took their match to seven sets before the Brazilian prevailed.

Calderano, who won three of the first four sets and then dropped the next two sets, outscored Tanviriyavechakul 12-10 in the seventh and deciding set.

Other men's winners were Fan Zhendong (CHN), Hung Ka Tak (HKG), Yang Heng-Wei (TPE), Patryk Zatowka (POL), Kim Minhyeok (KOR) and Yuto Muramatsu (JPN).
