STATEMENT BY THE IOC ATHLETES’ COMMISSION

Lausanne, 24 October 2001 - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today received the following statement from the IOC Athletes’ Commission:

“Further to the tragic events of 11 September 2001, the IOC Athletes’ Commission would like to confirm its confidence in and support to the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002 (SLOC) in the preparation of the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Games.

According to one of the Fundamental principles of the Olympic Charter, “the practice of sport is a human right.” It is essential that the athletes of the world who meet the qualification criteria and who have trained hard for several years, have the right to participate in the Olympic Games.”
