Sochi 2014 welcomes the world in Vancouver

As it waits to receive the Olympic flag from Vancouver, the Sochi 2014 Organising Committee has been showcasing its new brand and its project to the world from its Canadian home atSochi2014.ru World, Russky Dom. Located in the Museum of Science, Sochi’s Vancouver headquarters are between the Vancouver Olympic Village and BC Place Stadium, which is hosting the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, giving them an ideal location to let athletes and fans alike learn all about Sochi and its Olympic plans.


Cultural Exchange

As well as welcoming people to Sochi2014.ru World, the organisers of Russia’s first Olympic Winter Games have also been showcasing Russian culture to Vancouverites and Olympic visitors in a programme entitled “Sochi 2014 Days in Vancouver 2010”. Featuring world-renowned conductor Yuri Bashmet, artists like Gorky Park, the Kuban Cossack Chorus, the hip-hop group The Battle for Respect, and the Moscow State Chamber Choir, conducted by Vladimir Minin, the programme has provided the opportunity for people in this current host city to get a taste of what the world can look forward to in 2014.

Observation

However, Sochi has not just been inviting people to join them but has also been closely observing how the Games in Vancouver have been run. With a 150-strong team in town to observe and learn from the Vancouver 2010 Organising Committee and their partners through the IOC’s observer programme, they will undoubtedly be able to take away a number of best practices and lessons that they can apply to their own Games in 2014.

Sochi 2014

Sochi was elected as the host city for the XXII Olympic Winter Games at the 119th IOC Session in Guatemala City on 4 July 2007. Sochi won the vote against the cities of Salzburg (Austria) and PyeongChang (Republic of Korea) in the second round of voting. The Russian city edged out PyeongChang by 51 votes to 47, with Salzburg having been eliminated in round one. The Sochi Games will play host to the seven Olympic Winter sports currently on the Olympic programme, and will run from 7 to 23 February 2014.
