Senegal complete line-up for London 2012 men’s football tournament

Senegal beat Oman in the final qualifying match for the London 2012 men’s football tournament, and will now face hosts Great Britain in the group stages after the draw was made in London.

The match will take place at Old Trafford, Manchester, on 26 July, with United Arab Emirates and Uruguay completing the group.

In Group B, Mexico, South Korea, and Switzerland will join Olympic debutants Gabon, who won the African qualifiers, while Brazil will begin their quest to win a first-ever Olympic gold medal with games against Egypt, New Zealand and Olympic debutants Belarus in Group C.

World and European champions Spain, meanwhile, will face Asian titleholders Japan, Honduras and Morocco in Group D.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals.

London 2012 Chairman Seb Coe is already looking forward to the tournament: “Now that the draws for the Olympic football tournament have taken place, fans can begin to get excited about the amazing spectacle, the incredible teams and world-class players – in both the men’s and women’s tournaments – that will be coming to Great Britain this summer,” he said.

“With matches taking place across England as well as in Scotland and Wales, and with tickets still available, football also provides people with a unique opportunity to still enjoy the Olympic experience this summer.”

The draw took place at Wembley – where the gold medal matches will be held – and was hosted by FIFA general secretary Jérôme Valcke along with former England striker Gary Lineker and Brazilian legend Ronaldo – the highest scorer in the history of the FIFA World Cup and an Olympic bronze medallist in Atlanta in 1996.
