Russians gain revenge to take men's beach volleyball gold medal

Russia's Oleg Stoyanovskiy and Artem Iarzutkin gained revenge on Jose Gregorio Gomez and Rolando Hernandez of Venezuela to secure the men's beach volleyball gold medal on 27 August.

The Venezuelan duo recently knocked the Russians out of the World Under-19 Championship in Portugal at the quarter-final stage, but Stoyanovskiy and Iarzutkin grabbed the glory at Nanjing 2014 with a dominant display at the city’s Sports Park Complex.

Height superiority and fine play were key to the Russians' 21-12, 21-13 triumph as they won the first men’s beach volleyball gold medal awarded at a Youth Olympic Games.

“We played strong. Our coach gave us a good strategy for the match because we lost to this team three weeks ago, so today we played very good on the block and defence,” Stoyanovskiy said.

“We didn’t win medals in the previous two championships, so that was a maximum goal to win, especially here on the Olympic stage,” Iarzutkin added.

And the victorious pair already know what they are going to do with the miniature stuffed NanjingLELE (the Games mascot) cuddly toy presented to all medallists at these Games.

“We’ll present them to our younger brothers and sisters,” Stoyanovskiy said.

The Venezuelans were happy to improve on the bronze medal they took home from the Under-19 World Championships.

“We get out of the final with a loss, but with our heads held high,” Hernandez said.

“Winning this silver medal is a great experience, we always dreamed about it, and finally we have it in our hands. We lost the final, but we enjoyed it all,” said Gomez.

Argentina’s Santiago Karim Aulisi and Leandro Nicolas Aveiro claimed the bronze medal by beating Finland’s Miro Maattanen and Santeri Siren 21-10, 12-21, 15-12.

“After losing the semi-final we told each other to just keep going and really try hard,” Aulisi said.

“We gave all of us and we are so happy about this,” Aveiro said.
