Rio 2016 announces first 83 cities of Olympic Torch Relay route
The Rio 2016 Organising Committee has announced the first 83 cities that will experience the excitement of the Olympic Torch Relay ahead of next year’s Olympic Games.
These cities will provide the finish locations for each day of the Olympic Torch Relay – Presented by Coca-Cola, Nissan, and Bradesco - which will begin in the capital city of Brasilia, where the Olympic flame is due to arrive in May 2016.
The 83 cities were chosen so that the route could reach as much of the Brazilian population as possible during the course of the relay, which will conclude on 5 August 2016, when the last torchbearer will light the Olympic Cauldron during the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony, at the Maracana Stadium.
Following the announcement, Rio 2016 President Carlos Arthur Nuzman said: “We want to show the world the chemistry that we believe will be born when the Olympic flame meets the warmth of the Brazilian people. It would be impossible to mount such a logistical plan without working together with the governments and their public servants, such as in security, traffic control and public order. Some cities will also organise celebrations to mark the end of the Torch Relay every day.”
Following the traditional Olympic flame lighting ceremony in the Greek city of Olympia, the birthplace of the Ancient Olympic Games, the Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay will travel across Brazil for approximately 90-100 days.
There will be around 12,000 torchbearers carrying the flame along approximately 20,000 kilometers of Brazilian roads, while the flame will also fly 16,000km over the North and Midwest part of the country, between the cities of Teresina and Campo Grande.
The Rio 2016 Olympic Torch Relay convoy is expected to visit 500 cities and towns – some 300 hosting the Olympic Torch Relay and a further 200 cheering the convoy as it passes by with the flame on display.
By adding up the populations of these municipalities, the relay will reach an estimated 90 per cent of Brazil’s population.
The complete list of cities on the Olympic Torch Relay route will be revealed at the beginning of next year.
