Record success for the 12th Gymnaestrada

The 12th Gymnaestrada ended on the shores of the Tagus in Lisbon’s Park of the Nations with record participation.

Besides the 25,000 gymnasts representing the 57 member federations affiliated to the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), this ceremony saw the presence of IOC President Jacques Rogge, the Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on Sport for Development and Peace, Adolf Ogi, and the President of the Portuguese Republic, Jorge Sampaio.

Launched in 1953 by the FIG, the Gymnaestrada is a major cultural event which, every four years, brings together gymnasts from all continents, of all ages and from all socio-cultural backgrounds.

It is a sports event unique in its kind, since it excludes any competitiveness in favour of demonstrations and group displays. Events symbolising the concept of sport for all, such as the Gymnaestrada, can only strengthen the universal and peaceful values inherent in sport, for both the spectators and the athletes.

The 13th Gymnaestrada will be held in 2007 in Dornbirn, Austria.
