Qualified fencing teams announced for Athens games
The International Fencing Federation (FIE) has announced the names of the teams that have qualified to compete at the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad - ATHENS 2004 - in the four team fencing events that are on the Games programme.
In each weapon category the first four teams that qualified through the FIE Official Ranking are ranked 1 to 4, and the teams that qualified through the FIE Adjusted Official Ranking are ranked 5 to 8. The respective National Olympic Committees must still confirm their team’s participation.
Team Men’s And Women’s Épée
In the men’s épée event, the qualifiers are France, Russia, Germany, Hungary, Ukraine, China, the USA and Egypt – in order of qualification (1 to 8). In the women’s competition, the teams qualified for Athens are Germany, Hungary, China, Russia, France, South Korea, Canada and South Africa.
Team Men’s Foil
In the team foil event, the countries that are through to Athens are Germany, Italy, China, Russia, France, South Korea, the USA and Egypt.
Team Men’s Sabre
For the men’s sabre event, the qualifiers are Russia, Hungary, France, Ukraine, Italy, China, the USA and Egypt.
Fencing At The Games
Some 200 fencers will take part in the 2004 Olympic Games in 10 different events. These events, which will be held at the Helliniko Olympic Complex, are men’s individual and team foil, women’s individual foil, men’s individual and team épée, women’s individual and team épée, men’s individual and team sabre and women’s individual sabre. Women’s individual sabre is a new event to the Games.
