Progress made for Saudi women athletes at London 2012

The IOC had a very constructive meeting in Lausanne with the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee last week (Thursday). During the meeting they discussed the potential participation of Saudi women at the London Olympic Games and Saudi Arabia’s culture and traditions.

A list of potential female athletes for the Games was presented. This will now be studied by the IOC together with the relevant International Sports Federations in order to assess the level of each athlete.

The possibility to include women officials in the Saudi Arabian delegation in London was also discussed.

After the assessment of the level of each athlete by IOC and by the International Federations concerned a formal proposal will be submitted to the next meeting of IOC Executive Board when it meets in Quebec City in May.

Following Thursday’s meeting, the IOC is confident that Saudi Arabia is working to include women athletes and officials at the Olympic Games in London in accordance with the International Federations’ rules.
