President Rogge visits Romania
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge has just undertaken a two-day visit to Bucharest, at the invitation of the President of the Romanian Olympic Committee, Octavian Morariu. During this trip, President Rogge was received by the President of the Republic, Traian Basescu, and Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, with whom he addressed, among other issues, the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing, the development of sport in the country and the role it can play, especially among young people. Accompanied by IOC member and European Olympic Committees (EOC) President Patrick J. Hickey, President Rogge also attended the inauguration of the “Sydney 2000” Olympic Centre, before receiving the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Romania’s National Physical Education and Sports Academy.
