Peru and Republic of Korea kick off men’s football tournament with victories

The men’s teams of Republic of Korea and Peru each enjoyed successful starts to the Nanjing 2014 football tournament at Jiangning Sports Centre Stadium on 18 August.

Four goals from Kim Gyuhyeong and a second half hat-trick from Lee Jiyong set up an impressive 9-0 win for the Koreans over Vanuatu.

The Koreans, who led 4-0 by the end of the first half, before Lee came on as a second-half substitute to add his three goals, will certainly have grabbed the attention of all of their future opponents in Nanjing.

Meanwhile, Peru opened with a 2-1 win against Iceland with all three goals coming early in the first half.  An own goal from Iceland’s Kristofer Ingi Kristinsson, followed by a free-kick from Gerald Tavara of Peru gave the South Americans a 2-0 lead after 26 minutes.

Iceland defender Torfi Timoteus Gunnarsson then clawed a goal back for his side just before half-time, but Peru hung on in the second half to record a hard-fought victory.
